 Wanshengyu mahogany

1. Distribution or main origin

It is produced in Southeast Asia, including central and southern Laos, all parts of Cambodia, northeast, East and central Thailand, and south of Guangping province of Vietnam.

2. Botanical characteristics

Trees generally evergreen and evergreen, sometimes with trunk up to 120 cm in diameter in Thailand and some with branches up to 60 cm. The bark is smooth and hard, light yellow to grayish brown, scaly, with longitudinal cracks, sometimes exfoliated into fragments.

3. Growth environment

Dalbergia odorifera mainly grows in semi deciduous monsoon rain or riverside evergreen forest from 100m to 400m above sea level. It can also be seen at 1000m above sea level in the mountains of Laos, which may be the highest altitude for it to adapt to the growth environment.

4. Wood characteristics

Jiaozhi Dalbergia odorifera grows slowly. It takes hundreds of years for it to become a timber. Especially, it is extremely rare for high-quality and complete wood without insect damage. This is also the reason why the veneer furniture on the market is very rare and expensive.

The growth ring is not obvious or slightly obvious. The new section of heartwood is purplish red brown or dark reddish brown, often with dark brown or chestnut brown deep stripes. The maximum tangential diameter is 244 μ m, with an average of 104 μ m, and the number is small to a little less, 2-13 2。 It has acid aroma or weak, fine structure, straight texture, air dry density of 1.01-1.09 g / cm3.

5. Material properties and uses

Dalbergia odorifera has luster, high strength, high hardness, strong corrosion resistance, strong insect resistance, usually straight texture, fine and uniform structure. When sawing, the wood gives off a pungent, sour smell. The color is generally reddish red or crimson, and it can be dark red when oxidized in air. The compressive strength along the grain is 107.87mpa and the bending strength is 259.9mpa.

Good processing performance and smooth planed surface. It is mainly used for high-grade mahogany furniture, table, chair, stool, decorative veneer, craft carving, musical instruments, etc. The furniture and handicrafts made of Jiaozhi Huangtan (big red acid branch) have high investment and collection value.

6. Identification of Dalbergia odorifera

1. Look at the color, the wood grain

The color and texture of Pterocarpus hupehensis is rich in variety, with gradual colors. The same wood presents light reddish brown, reddish brown, purplish brown and black brown, and several colors are interlaced and changeable. The structure of Dalbergia odorifera is fine and dense. The bristle hole is very small. The texture is clear and straight. It has a three-dimensional sense. It has a golden fluorescent floating under strong light. It is very beautiful.

2. Oil property and density

Generally speaking, there are differences in material quality between Dalbergia hupehensis due to latitude, high mountains or hills and plains. Although this difference is not very big, but can be distinguished, mainly in the air dry density and oiliness. In general, Dalbergia odorifera has good oil saturation.

Generally speaking, the material of Dalbergia odorifera in high mountain area is generally better than that in hilly or plain area; the material in north latitude is better than that in south latitude area; the air dry density of Dalbergia odorifera in high mountain area is slightly higher than that in Hilly and plain area; oil property of Dalbergia odorifera in high mountain area is slightly higher than that in Hilly and plain area.

3. Smell

All sour wood (including red and black) has a sour aroma. Generally speaking, the acid flavor with low material density is stronger than that with high material density. The reason is very simple: the best material in northern Laos grows in the high mountain area of northern Laos, with good ventilation and barren land. The growth of trees is much slower than that in the South (including Cambodia and Thailand). Although the structure is more compact, the material is more delicate, and the oil is heavier, the smell is more abundant. This is also the reason why the northern material is better than the southern material.
